Annapolis. MD

This new ground-up house on the shore of the Rhode River near Annapolis will replace an outdated house that does not fit the clients’ needs. The new house will reflect its site, with large expanses of glass facing the water, and a sizable rear deck to enjoy the outdoors and entertain, with direct access to the water for boating and water sports. The new open plan will create a unified space for this tightly-knit family to gather, cook, celebrate holidays, and allow the grandchildren to run around and play. The massing consists of a charred wood (Shou Sugi Ban) base that supports a lightweight upper level. Feature wood walls wrap the entry, and reappear throughout the house in the kitchen, at the fireplace, and in the office - tying the house together visually. A geothermal mechanical system will be installed, as well as many other sustainable features (including an elevator for aging in place), for an efficient and resilient residence that will support the family for generations to come.
